چکیده

The cooperation between designers, engineers and scientists in the human–computer interaction (HCI) community is often difficult, and can only be explained by investigating the different paradigms by which they operate. This study proposes a paradigm model for designers, engineers and scientists, using three barriers to separate the professions. We then report on an empirical study that attempted to validate the understand/transform world barrier in the paradigm model using an online questionnaire. We conclude that the used ‘Attitude About Reality’ scale was unsuitable for measuring this barrier, whereas information about the educational background of the participants was a good predictor for the self-reported profession (designer, engineer or scientist). Interestingly, among the three professions, engineers appear to be the cohesive element, since they often have dual backgrounds, whereas very few participants had dual science/design backgrounds. Engineers could, therefore, build a bridge between designers and scientists, and through their integrative role, could guide the HCI community to realizing its full potential. r 2007 Elsevier Ltd. AI Characters and Directors for Interactive Computer Games

We are creating an environment for investigating the role of advanced AI in interactive, story-based computer games. This environment is based on the Unreal Tournament (UT) game engine and the Soar AI engine. Unreal provides a 3D virtual environment, while Soar provides a flexible architecture for developing complex AI characters. This paper describes our progress to date, starting with our gam...

Pogamut toolkit (demonstration)

All experiments using intelligent virtual agents, sooner or later, ask for a specific virtual environment that would fit their setup. Seeking such environment is a daunting task accompanied with the need for an appropriate agent adapter that provides infrastructure for mediation of virtual body senses and actions thereby enabling remote high-level agent control. This demo presents Pogamut toolk...

Towards Interfacing Bdi with 3d Graphics Engines

This paper presents work in progress towards the goal of creating human-like artificial intelligence that interfaces with a 3D virtual environment to control computergenerated characters. We will outline out current development regarding the creation of BDI agents using the AI tool JACK, and how we intend to create a link between JACK and sophisticated graphics and game engines including Irrlic...

The Behavior Oriented Design of an Unreal Tournament Character

This paper presents a case study for using a relatively recently developed methodology, Behavior Oriented Design, to develop an Intelligent Virtual Agent (IVA). Our usability study was conducted in Unreal Tournament using the game Capture The Flag. The final agent displays reasonably competent behavior: she is able to pursue multiple goals simultaneously and produce well-ordered behavior.
